Carbide/binder grain boundaries in a FIB lamella prepared from the WC-Co-Re cemented carbide were examined by high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy at a high resolution. Rhenium was found to segregate at the grain boundaries forming complexions of 2 to 3 atomic monolayers, which presumably consist of mixed W-Re carbide.

Regardless of δ-ferrite fraction in the additively manufactured CrNi stainless, the increase in strain rate slows down the kinetics of strain-induced γ→α' martensitic transformation, but weakly influences the stress and strain, at which the macroscopic transformation stage starts.

Strain-rate dependent deformation behavior of additively manufactured stainless steel with different fractions of δ-ferrite

1. Modified Likhachev-Volkov model may be successfully used for the simulation of the strain variation during cooling and isothermal holding under stress.
2. To describe the strain variation on holding after active deformation, elastic energy stored during the transformation should be decreasd.

Even in simple experiments on uniaxial tension of filled elastomeric materials, an inhomogeneous strain field is observed in a standard dumbbell-shaped sample, not to mention experiments with complex loading history. The way out of this situation is to use samples of a different shape, for example, ring-shaped, rather than dumbbell-shaped samples.

Experimetnal spectrum of crystal curvature enables to discriminate between bainite and marnetsite and quantify them. To this end a main phase is fitted first to relevant spectrum tail.

Effect of cooling rate on the bainite fraction in low carbon martensitic steel: combined analysis of transformation kinetics and crystal curvature

Established that at the increase of the mass fraction of carbon from 0.09% to 0.30% in the as-cast metal, the metal hardness increases. At the same time, the structural-phase composition consists of a pseudo-pearlitic structure (ferrite-nitride mixture) and austenitic structure in different ratios since an increase in the carbon content leads to an increase in the amount of the pseudo-pearlite. The heat treatment of specimens with the mass fraction of carbon of 0.09% and 0.30% at 1250 °C for two hours leads to their complete austenization. In this case, the hardness of steels of both compositions decreases to 22 – 24 HRC (0.09 wt.% of carbon) and to 28 – 30 HRC (0.30 wt.% of carbon).
