Microstructure formation during FSW under low heat input conditions is determined by processes of severe plastic deformation of ferritic and austenitic grains, followed by the transformation of deformed austenite into martensite. In the ferrite phase, the formation of a simple shear texture of the D1/D2 {112}<111> type was revealed.

Phase energy diagram showing the destabilization of TiC phase relative to carbon solid solution in titanium matrix under high pressure. The electron density distribution shows the overlap of electron clouds between titanium, which creates an octahedral complex with carbon, and the outer titanium atoms, which explains the increase in the energy of the system

Asymmetric rolling at room temperature and subsequent low-temperature annealing allows the average grain size of the initial coarse-grained Grade 4 titanium to be reduced by two orders of magnitude. Asymmetric rolling, due to structural refinement, contributes to an increase in the yield and tensile strength by more than one and a half times.

The conception of irregular fullerene-based helical oligomers was introduced and their structure and polarizability were calculated with relevant DFT techniques. Their mean polarizabilities and distances between the terminal fullerene units are symbate. Helical oligomers show subadditivity of polarizability in contrast to the oligomers of other classes.
